Competition - 8th Apr 2015

Today´s activities at the airfield were at the end much shorter, than we expected. After the takeoffs it was difficult to stay in the air - especially for smaller gliders and even if the start line was already open for 3 classes, we decided to cancel the day in all classes due to unfavourable weather. Just later in the afternoon it became sunny for an hour or two and some of the pilots took off just for pleasure. Let´s relax and hope for a better next day – so far it looks quite nice tomorrow, according to meteorologists from SHMU.

Another windy day is over. The weather was not that good as we expected, which has resulted in difficulties on the tasks and in quite many outlandings – even as far as on the other side of the Danube: in Hungary.
Even the takeoffs were not easy – some gliders had to be towed twice. The northbound parts of the tasks were without strong thermals, but according to pilots´ words, it was possible to fly without losing much altitude. Flying towards the south was really fast with a groundspeed even over 230 km/h. There were quite strong thermals reported, up to 2100 meters QNH, but far away from each other and not always easy to find. Later on the high clouds appeared and also the cumulus became spilled.
The hardest part was to reach Nitra with a strong headwind. Gliding ratio came as low as 23 and in the pilots´ minds, it might have been similar as fly Blaniks (in Slovak often called „The boiler plant“). Respect to all who managed to do it! See you all tomorrow, hopefully the wind will be soon over as the mud was...
